Makan in the Dark (Dialogue in the Dark Singapore)

Dine in total darkness and gain a deeper appreciation for life without sight. Makan in the Dark is a team-building experience where participants eat with a blind guide, building empathy and camaraderie.

As students &/or staff partake in a meal in darkness, usually with no clue on what the menu items are, they undergo a transformational yet challenging process relying on their other senses to help them dine. Suitable as a social or team-building event, Makan in the Dark allows participants to step out of their comfort zone in a fun, unique way, while building a sense of empathy and camaraderie.

Details

Staff/Students will be led to their table in total darkness in groups of up to 7. They will be served their food by a blind facilitator who will also join them to eat in the dark, and share stories and challenges faced by the blind community.

Learning Objectives

Students/staff will get to foster team cohesiveness and energise team vitality in a fun, memorable way whilst also gaining insights into some of the challenges and views of someone living with a disability. They will also tap into their other senses as they enjoy their meal in total darkness, and develop a sense of gratitude for their sense of sight.

Target Audience: Secondary 1- 4/5 students, Post Secondary (JC/ Poly/ ITE)

Runtime: All year round

Fee: $40 ($43.60 after GST) per student and $50 ($54.50 after GST) per adult. Prices are subject to changes.

Hearing thoughts and reflections after dining in total darkness

I really enjoyed the interaction between my groupmates and my blind guide in the dark. Without our phones and other distractions, I find that there is more bonding and dialogue within the duration of the lunch than we had on a typical day!
