The exhibition focuses on Kampong Gelam’s historical significance as a thriving port town to highlight the local Malay community’s rich history, culture and heritage as well as Singapore’s connections to the wider Malay Archipelago.
Details
Teachers can explore the virtual exhibition to highlight some artefacts to their students during lessons or assign students to explore the exhibition on their own to learn more about Singapore’s Malay culture and heritage. Teachers may also choose to pair the ‘Curators’ Tour of Malay Heritage Centre Permanent Galleries’ with this resource.
Learning Objectives
Students will learn about the history of Kampong Gelam through the artefacts from the National Collection and the Malay community. They will gain a deeper appreciation of the role of the Malay community and their contribution Singapore’s development as a port-city. Students are encouraged to reflect on the significance of preserving Singapore’s unique heritage too.
