Take a trip with us to the cultural heartland of Kreta Ayer and join our “research team” to learn more about the contributions of the Chinese community! Students, playing the role of young reporters, will visit the Kreta Ayer Heritage Gallery and study the Intangible Cultural Heritage of five cultural arts – Chinese Opera, Chinese Puppetry, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Tea Appreciation and Nanyin music. They will also learn about the shophouses and history of the area.

Details

The learning journey comprises a precinct walk around Chinatown Complex and Sago Street, where students will be introduced to various trades and architecture distinctive to Kreta Ayer. Thereafter, students will head to the Kreta Ayer Heritage Gallery to explore 4 stations that feature various lessons and activities relating to Chinese culture and heritage.

Learning Objectives

Students will learn about the history of Kreta Ayer and the cultural practices of the Chinese community in Singapore. Students will also hear about the real-life stories of prominent Kreta Ayer community members to understand their contributions towards nation-building and their significance in multicultural Singapore.

Target Audience: Primary 4 students

Runtime: Weekdays of MOE School Calendar (exceptions apply)

Fee: $8.72 per student (including GST) before GST (MOE funding provided to schools)
