Museum Based Learning: Tales of the Emporium
Travel with us to the emporium of Geylang Serai and join our expedition to learn about the contributions of the Malay community! Students, playing the role of young explorers, will visit Geylang Serai Heritage Gallery and discover the rich history of the area. They will also learn about leisure activities from yesteryear and the pasar (market) as a centre for food and goods for special occasions celebrated by the Malay and Muslim community.
Details
The learning journey comprises of a precinct walk around Pasar Geylang Serai, where students will be introduced to the distinctive architecture and trades and of Geylang Serai. Students will then head to Geylang Serai Heritage Gallery to explore 5 stations that feature various lessons and activities relating to Malay-Muslim culture and heritage.
Learning Objectives
Through guided field work, Students will learn about the history of Geylang Serai and the cultural practices of the Malay-Muslim community in Singapore. Students will also explore various stories from the Malay-Muslim community about growing up and living in Geylang Serai to understand the community’s contributions towards building and nurturing multicultural Singapore.
Target Audience: Primary 4 students
Runtime: January to May, July to November
Fee: $8 before GST (MOE funding provided to schools)
